Roverbella

Province: Mantua · Region: Lombardy · Population: 8,500 · Postal code: 46048

The name comes from the oak, and the arms confirm it: a gold lion beside a green oak. Tradition tells of a tall, sturdy tree ringed by the first houses, where piazza Italia now opens — Rovere Bella. It is only legend: the place name is centuries older, and in 1182 a lawsuit was already gathering testimony about land at Roverbella that owed rent to the Pieve di Porto.

Another explanation derives it from Celtic words for a military crossroads, and anyone travelling between Mantua, Verona and Lake Garda did come through. Napoleon slept at villa Gobio in 1796, on the eve of the siege of Mantua, in the house that eighty-three years earlier had lodged Elisabeth Christine, wife of Emperor Charles VI. At villa Benati, in July 1848, Charles Albert received Garibaldi, who offered his sword to make Italy one: a plaque still recalls the historic refusal.
