San Giovanni del Dosso

Province: Mantua · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,298 · Postal code: 46020

In the sixteenth century one of the painters at the Este court signed himself with the name of this place: the father of Giovanni Francesco Luteri owned a farm at Dosso della Scaffa, today called San Giovanni del Dosso, and in Ferrara they called him Dosso. The surname we know him by, Dossi, was born in the eighteenth century from a mistake by local historians, who took the nickname for a family name.

The village has a stubborn streak: in 1878 the parishioners refused the priest sent by the bishop and elected one of their own by plebiscite, and the schism lasted two years. It became a municipality late, in 1924, breaking away from Quistello. The earthquake of 2012 brought down the pediment of the parish church.
