Quingentole

Province: Mantua · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,194 · Postal code: 46020

The name is probably a number. Quingentole would come from quingenti, five hundred, perhaps the original measure of the place, and in that case it belongs to a family of Po valley place names that count: Trecenta, Nonantola, Quarantoli. The other two explanations are more modest: five miles from the road that joined Ostiglia to Quarantoli, or quinque gentes, five families.

In 977 the emperor Otto the Third gave the village to the bishop of Mantua, and the bishops' palace is still there, facing the square: it is called Gran Casa del Sole and it is the town hall. Opposite, on the forecourt of the parish church of San Lorenzo, stand two red marble lions of the late fourteenth century. The Po runs just behind the embankment, a little below the mouth of the Secchia.
