Schivenoglia

Province: Mantua · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,240 · Postal code: 46020

The name is a small joke: schivare plus noia, to dodge boredom, because for centuries people came here on holiday to amuse themselves. The land, though, was marshy and unhealthy, beaten by plague and by the floods of the Po — that of 1232 and then the devastating one of 1705. Matilda of Canossa gave it to the monks of Polirone.

In 1575 the inhabitants, tired of depending in church matters on the parish priest of San Giovanni del Dosso, asked for and obtained a priest of their own. Two names came out of the village: Andrea da Schivenoglia, who in the fifteenth century wrote a chronicle of the years between 1445 and 1481, and the painter Francesco Maria Raineri, born in 1676, whom everyone simply called lo Schivenoglia.
