Cassinetta di Lugagnano

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,884 · Postal code: 20081

On the night of 26 April 1945, at about three in the morning, near the parish house of Cassinetta di Lugagnano a meeting was held between representatives of the Americans, the Germans and the Repubblica di Salò: cardinal Alfredo Schuster of Milan and cardinal Maurilio Fossati of Turin were there, and the German generals Wolff and Schulz. In a village of fewer than two thousand people, at three in the morning, the end of the war in Italy was being negotiated.

For the rest Cassinetta is a village cut in two by the Naviglio Grande and stitched back together by a granite bridge built in the seventeenth century, still today the main crossing. Until 1862 it was called simply Lugagnano. The channel that marks the boundary between the two halves was dug for the Birago family in 1428, by licence of duke Filippo Maria Visconti, to turn the wheels of a mill that is still grinding. And along the water stand the villas: when having a house on the Naviglio became fashionable, Milanese families came to build them here.
