Albairate

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,621 · Postal code: 20080

In the territory of Albairate, at the Cascina Scamozzina, Bronze Age finds were made so distinctive that they gave their name to a whole archaeological culture: the Scamozzina culture. The first to dig there, at the beginning of the twentieth century, was the writer Carlo Dossi, who owned the farm: he studied and catalogued the finds, which can be seen today in the archaeological museum of Corbetta.

On the town's coat of arms there is an uprooted birch, and they are canting arms: in Lombard dialect the birch is called albarott. The name of the village, on the other hand, is thought to come from the Latin arboretum, a place full of trees — and of that ancient wood the Riazzolo wood remains. In the eleventh century the territory was split among three small comuni; after the devastations of Frederick Barbarossa two of them vanished, and only Albairate was left, then a village ringed by low walls with five gates, which appears in the documents from 1054.
