Saint John and Cisliano's calendar of fairs
📅 Every year, on 24 June, with the Sagra di San Giovanni in the third week
Cisliano celebrates Saint John on 24 June with the accompanying Sagra di San Giovanni fair, in the third week of the month.
In 1619 the fief of Cisliano was put up for auction and the brothers Raffaele and Ambrogio Fagnani opened with 325 scudi, a derisory sum. Count Giovanni Battista Panigarola raised the bid, the Fagnani went up to 540 within a few days, and in the end they took it home for 560 scudi in all. That was the price of a village in the countryside west of Milan: two noblemen bidding against each other for a stretch of plain the way one bids for a piece of furniture. The Fagnani held it for fifty years, after which it passed to the Charterhouse of Pavia.
Four thousand two hundred and sixty-three inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Milan, inside the Parco agricolo Sud. The name comes from the Roman gens Caecilia: in 849 a witness declares that he lives in the vicus Cecilianus, and Ceciliano was corrupted over time into Cisliano. On the map of the Duchy of Milan painted in 1581 for the Gallery of Maps in the Vatican the name appears mangled as Ciſſuno. In 1903 the writer and archaeologist Carlo Dossi excavated twenty-four complete late Celtic tombs here. The coat of arms, of 1992, bears three sprigs that were meant to be three poplars.
