Saint Margaret, patron of Pantigliate
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday of September
Pantigliate celebrates Saint Margaret on the first Sunday of September, in the church dedicated to her.
Pantigliate is first written down on 17 May 859, not in the body of a deed but in a witness's name: one Ambrosius de Panteliate, in a charter of the Milanese monastery of Sant'Ambrogio. The name is Celtic-Roman, most likely the Latin personal name Pantilius with the Gaulish suffix -ate, which marked ownership of a place. The same root returns in a second Pantigliate, near Lodi.
The arms are canting: the red panther issuing from the partition echoes the Pantalìate family, held by tradition to come from here; the azure and silver bands stand for the waters that made the plain fertile; the crossed swords for an armed clash fought here in 1294 between Milanese and Lodi men. The town hall occupies Villa Mora, a sixteenth-century country house of the Capra counts: a lease of 1540 lists noble and rustic buildings, gardens and a fishpond fed by the Parazzola channel. Its name comes from Enrico Mora, a nineteenth-century owner.
