Rodano

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,526 · Postal code: 20090

On the seventeenth of January 1869 a royal decree established that Rodano, together with Rovagnasco, Briavacca, Segrate and Limito, would be annexed to Pioltello. Five months later, on the twenty-first of June, a second decree of Victor Emmanuel II changed its mind and instead created the municipality of Rodano as it exists today. In between, the record says, there were heated disputes: the village owes its administrative existence to having argued loudly enough to be heard. The document that ruled in its favour is displayed in the council chamber of Casa Gola.

Four thousand five hundred and twenty-six inhabitants in the metropolitan city of Milan, inside the Parco Agricolo Sud, in countryside still crossed by working spring-fed pools: those that feed the Muzzetta have been a nature reserve since 1984 and a site of community importance. The coat of arms recognised in 1936 puts a golden cow on a blue field — the canals and the livestock — but it also carried the fascist chief with the lictor's bundle: in 1945 the bundle was removed and replaced by two branches of oak and laurel. The municipality is home to a scooter and Lambretta museum that holds the historical archive of Innocenti.
