Vermezzo con Zelo is a comune that has been born twice. The first time in the Napoleonic period, when Vermezzo and Zelo Surrigone were put together into a single body; then the two villages became separate again and stayed that way for two centuries, until the eighth of February 2019, when the merger was made afresh. The old name of Vermezzo was Viridis medium, "in the middle of the green", and that is why green has remained on the coat of arms, beside the eagle of the Pozzobonelli.
At the entrance to the village stands the Cascina Grande, which around 1920 its owner — at that time also the mayor — had restored in medieval style: in the courtyard he reproduced the towers of the Castello Sforzesco of Milan in miniature, gave the brick silos the shape of defensive towers and the hay barns that of three-aisled churches. On the square, instead, stands the Pozzobonelli-Panigarola palace, which some studies attribute to Bramante: it was renewed by Gottardo Panigarola, administrator to Ludovico il Moro, with frescoes in the Leonardesque taste.
