Rosate

Province: Milan · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,395 · Postal code: 20088

Rosate was one of the chief places of the county of Burgaria, and from the tenth century the seat of a pieve on which some forty churches came to depend. The fief went to the Avogadri, and the reason is written down in the documents: the archbishop of Milan, Ariberto da Intimiano, gave it to Anselmo IV to reward him for his work as advocate of the Milanese Curia — a village as a lawyer's fee. Their stronghold was stormed twice by Frederick Barbarossa and in 1200 by the troops of Pavia.

In 1190 Rosate obtained the right to hold a market once a week, and in the middle of the thirteenth century it provided itself with a fishery: it was run, on behalf of the feudal lords, by the Crutched Friars or by the Templars, and it was still working five hundred years later, in the days of the Theresian land survey. The new fortifications were built with timber bought from the abbey of Morimondo. In 1523 the French army, encamped here, brought the plague with it: the village made a vow and raised a chapel to Saint Roch, on the road that leads from the cemetery towards Casorate Primo.
