Barlassina

Province: Monza and Brianza · Region: Lombardy · Population: 6,826 · Postal code: 20825

Barlassina lies on the hills of the Seveso valley, in the Brianza towards Como, split between a lower part by the river and a higher one on the Groane plateau. The first document naming it, then Barnasina, is a court ruling of 15 December 1288: three men “de loco de Barnasina” sued a man from Meda over some lost oxen.

Its arms are those of the de Barlassina, a Lombard family that probably took its name from here: on blue, a green tree rising from a golden well between two red lions rearing against it. Before the Chiasso-Milan railway the village was the carters' halfway halt, and Cesare Cantù recalled the donkeys travellers rode there for a few coins: hence, probably, its nickname, the village of donkeys, borne out by Carlo Porta's lines of 1810 on the local donkey farms. In 1869 the comune was merged into Seveso, to the displeasure of both, and in 1901 made independent again.
