Saint Dalmatius, patron of the land of the Shrine of San Damiano
📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of September
Cogliate celebrates Saint Dalmatius on the second Sunday of September.
In the Brianza dialect Cogliate is still called San Dalmazi, and that is no affectation: sixteenth-century pastoral visits record the village as San Dalmazio, after the church of the Benedictine nuns of the local monastery. For the official name the historian Olivieri favours a personal name, Colius or Collius, without ruling out the low hill of the Groane the village sits on.
In 1184 the consuls of Milan settled a quarrel between the abbess and the men of Cogliate, making them swear to protect the monastery's property and pay tithes on grain, pulses, wine, flax, turnips, walnuts, chestnuts and lupins. The monastery dwindled to two nuns and was merged into Santa Maria in Valle in Milan; the deed forgot to name one of the two, Ursina, and it took eleven years for the pope to right the omission. The comune vanished twice as well, annexed to Ceriano Laghetto under Napoleon and again in 1869; it regained independence only in 1919.
