Misinto

Province: Monza and Brianza · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,195 · Postal code: 20826

The name of Misinto is said to come from the Latin Locus Medius Cinctus, the place in the middle, girdled: a clearing surrounded by woods, which is more or less what the village still is today, with the Groane Park lying to the east of it. In the documents it has been Misente, Misentum, Misentis, and between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries also Mixintum, but only in papers written outside the village; the present form takes over in all documents from about 1790.

With Lazzate, the neighbouring comune, the relationship has swung back and forth: in the Napoleonic period it was Misinto that was attached to Lazzate, but after the unification of Italy the roles were reversed, and in 1869 it was Misinto that annexed Lazzate, which regained its independence only in 1905. In 2022, while digging to redo the sewers, ruins came to light that looked Roman: on closer inspection, an archaeologist established, they were the remains of the old municipal aqueduct.
