Risotto alla Milanese rice, saffron, beef marrow and butter, creamy and soft
Rice, saffron, beef marrow and butter: Milan's golden dish, tied by legend to a glassmaker of the Duomo in 1574.
Read more →No Italian province has built on itself the way Monza and Brianza has: more than 41% of its surface is urbanised, the highest share in the country, and in Lissone, Vedano al Lambro and Bovisio Masciago the figure passes 80%. At 405 square kilometres it is Italy's third-smallest province and its second most densely populated. It was split off from the province of Milan in 2004 with its 55 municipalities, and it covers the Brianza, the historical district north-east of Milan.
Most visitors go to Monza and stop there. Around it the built fabric never breaks: you pass from Seregno to Desio, from Lissone to Vimercate without noticing the town has changed, and Brianza reads best that way, as one long city of places that each kept their own square. Not postcard country, but one of the parts of Italy where you understand best how the industrial north works.
