Bellusco

Bellusco lies in eastern Brianza, northeast of Monza. At the centre of the village stands the Da Corte castle, raised in the fifteenth century by Martino Da Corte over an older stronghold, guarding the old road from Milan to Bergamo. Above the gateway a marble slab carries the family arms and the inscription in which the builder states that the castle was made to offend no one, only to shelter him from his own undoing.

The moat has gone; of the drawbridge only the sockets for its chains remain above the entrance. From the early nineteenth century the castle was no longer one property: it was split among several owners, whose homes are still lived in. For centuries people here have told of a tunnel to the castle of Sulbiate: no trace has ever been found, and nobody has ever really looked. The arms show a red two-tier keep with Guelph merlons on green ground, for the castle's remains and the fertility of the soil.

Saint Justina, patron of the flower float palio since 1955

📅 Every year, on the second Sunday of September, with the Palio di Santa Giustina since 1955

Bellusco celebrates Saint Justina on the second Sunday of September, in the church dedicated to her. Every year, among the town's districts, the Palio di Santa Giustina is contested, with a jury judging the best biblically-themed flower float: the tradition dates back to 1955.
