Mezzago

Province: Monza and Brianza · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,106 · Postal code: 20883

On the sixteenth of May 1987 the Bloom opened at Mezzago, a live music venue that has since hosted, along with art-house film seasons, exhibitions and courses, bands such as Nirvana and Green Day. It is the sort of place one expects in a city rather than in a Brianza commune of four thousand one hundred and six inhabitants, and indeed at Mezzago the two things live side by side: in the same village, every May, the pink asparagus festival is held.

That asparagus is the real local speciality: its tip is pink instead of green, and the colour depends on the clay soil found here and on the way it is grown. It shares it only with Cilavegna, in the province of Pavia. The festival was established in the nineteen-fifties to make it known, and it takes place partly inside the courtyard of Palazzo Archinti, whose oldest core and whose tower go back to the twelfth century, when the building housed a community of Umiliati monks: the tower is twenty-eight metres high, has seven floors, and a clock was set into the sixth.
