Feast of Saint Martin of Tours
📅 Every year, on 11 November
On 11 November Borgarello celebrates its patron Saint Martin of Tours, to whom the parish church is dedicated.
In the arms of Borgarello there are felled tree trunks, and they recall something that was destroyed: the Parco Nuovo, the enormous hunting estate the Visconti created at the end of the fourteenth century between the castle of Pavia and the Certosa. Borgarello ended up inside it and lost its autonomy in 1525, after the battle of Pavia. The park later fell into ruin, but its name survived for centuries as the name of the administrative district the village belonged to: a vanished wood kept alive on paper.
It was not the last time the village ended up inside something bigger: in 1929 Borgarello, Torre del Mangano and Torriano were merged into the new municipality of Certosa di Pavia, and autonomy came back only in 1958. The name probably comes from the Latin burgulus, little borough; it appears as Bulgarello in a document of 1181. In the arms, beside the trunks, are the symbols of the Pallavicino and the Mezzabarba, who were the feudal lords, and wheat, maize and rice, which are what the fields give. Two thousand six hundred and fifty-nine inhabitants in the province of Pavia.
