Giussago

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,049 · Postal code: 27010

Giussago is the sum of a dozen villages that no longer exist. The comune took shape through successive mergers: in 1757 came Cassina Maggiore and Nivolto, in 1872 Casatico, in 1928 Baselica Bologna, Carpignago and Turago Bordone. And each of those had already swallowed others in its turn: Carpignago had absorbed Villanova de' Beretti, Guinzano and Liconasco, and Liconasco in turn Novedo, Moriago and San Colombanino. The result is that today the main village holds less than a third of the comune's inhabitants.

The most important of those villages was Baselica Bologna, seat of an ancient pieve whose jurisdiction reached as far as Casarile and Binasco; in the twelfth century it was called Baserice Nove, that is "new basilicas", and its church holds the remains of the blessed Baldassarre Ravaschieri of Chiavari. The name Giussago, on the other hand, comes from a Iustius, a Roman landowner; the road that linked Milan to Pavia passed close by here.
