Castello d'Agogna

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,091 · Postal code: 27030

Here the castle came before the village. The core is a small fort of the twelfth century which in the Renaissance became a lordly residence, and it was around that residence that the built-up area took shape: today the Isimbardi castle consists of four buildings arranged to enclose a square courtyard, with the corner tower to the west, and on the front of the tower that serves as the entrance one can still see the traces of the drawbridge and of the arched windows. The name says the rest: a castle on the left bank of the Agogna, in the Lomellina, a short way from Mortara.

The village also has an official portrait, and an old one. On the map of the Duchy of Milan painted in 1581 in the Gallery of Maps of the Vatican palaces it appears as Gogna Cast., and the stream beside it as Gogna Fiume: both of them without the initial A. In the Middle Ages it belonged to the abbey of Santa Croce di Mortara; in 1387 it was granted in fief to Antonio Porro, count of Pollenzo, but it soon returned to the State, and the comital title reappeared only in the eighteenth century with the Tarsis family. It passed to the House of Savoy with the whole of the Lomellina in 1713, and to the province of Pavia in 1859.
