Corana

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 798 · Postal code: 27050

For more than five centuries Corana was two comuni sharing a single village. In 1270 the part belonging to the archbishop's table of Milan set itself up as a comune of its own, «Corana della Mensa», to the north; the part left under the monastery of San Salvatore of Pavia took the name «Corana del Comune», to the south. These were not two different villages: the boundary ran through the built-up area, along what is now the road to Silvano and Cervesina. There was even a third, «Corana del Campone», grown up around a farmstead. The two were united only in 1802, once feudalism had ended.

Before all that Corana was a royal court: in 894 the emperor Lambert II of Spoleto gave it to his mother Ageltrude, and in 969 another empress, Adelaide, gave it to the monastery of San Salvatore in Pavia. Even after the union the perimeter kept moving: in 1868 the Cascinotto Mensa was detached and joined to Pieve Albignola, and in 1932 a piece of land taken from Silvano Pietra was added. Meanwhile Ghiaie has grown, on what used to be a large island in the Po, and it has now overtaken the old centre in population.
