From the tenth to the eighteenth century Pancarana always had the same master: the bishop of Pavia, who soon turned it into a fief. On the twentieth of October 1466 the bishop subinfeudated it to Pietro dal Verme, but the episcopal lordship went on unbroken for eight centuries. The name comes from Pancharius, a name used among the early Christians.
Between Pancarana and Sommo ran the ferry of the main road from Voghera to Pavia, put in order in the time of the Sforza: the long straight stretch towards Porana dates from then. The Po is a step away, but the village got off lightly: the floods broke again and again on the neighbouring places, and the plan of Pancarana is still the one of the seventeen hundreds.
