Pieve Albignola

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 916 · Postal code: 27030

Pieve Albignola has 916 inhabitants in the lower Lomellina, on the edge of the terrace that looks down on the valley of the Po. It is a flat comune by definition: between its lowest and its highest point there are eighteen metres. It was already called Plebs Albignole in the thirteenth century, and it always followed the fortunes of Sannazzaro de' Burgondi, within its district and then in the fief of the Malaspina, until the end of feudalism.

On the map of the Duchy of Milan painted in 1581 in the Gallery of Maps of the Vatican Palaces the village is there, but the painter got it wrong: he wrote it Pieue del Bignol, breaking the name in two. And the mistake lasted, because in the eighteenth century it was still being written Pieve d'Albignolo. In 1868 the hamlet of Cascinotto Mensa was added to it, which before belonged to Corana and to the archbishop's table of Milan — hence the name. In May the rose fair is held, and the commonest surnames are Fusetto, Marchesi and Poggi.
