Gambolò lies in the eastern Lomellina, on the Terdoppio, just south of Vigevano, with which its houses have by now merged. The oldest inhabitant whose name is known comes from the hamlet of Belcreda: a Celtic-age funerary vase carries the name of the dead man inside it, Vindonidius. Nothing is left of that old settlement: in 969 emperor Otto I gave it to his vassal Ingone, founder of the Belcredi, its feudal lords; the castle, built late in the thirteenth century, was destroyed, the village abandoned and the land absorbed into Gambolò.

The name of the village first appears in 999, in a document in which one Ademarus de Gambolate must pay damages to Leo, bishop of Vercelli. On 10 October 1639 Gambolò and eight other lands ceased to belong to the Novara and Pavia districts and entered the county of Vigevano; the province of Pavia would come only two centuries later. On 21 March 1849, during the First War of Independence, the municipal territory was the scene of the battle of the Sforzesca, in which the troops led by Carlo Alberto got the better of marshal Radetzky's army.
