Piazza Ducale is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, and it was among the first conceived as a single work: Ludovico il Moro wanted it in 1492 as the antechamber of his castle, with frescoed arcades running along three sides and the concave façade of the cathedral closing the scene. The Sforza castle above is among the largest fortified complexes in Europe, with Bramante's covered road.
The other glory is the shoe, and it has a date: in 1866 Italy's first industrial-model shoe factory was born here, and from there Vigevano went on to produce tens of millions of pairs exported all over the world. The International Shoe Museum, inside the castle, keeps that history. It is the second comune in the province after Pavia and the first by area, entirely inside the Ticino Valley park, and it was the first town in Lombardy to be granted the title of city in modern times. Leonardo worked nearby: the Sforzesca and its mills remember him.

Vigevano celebrates Saint Ambrose on the Monday after the second Sunday of October; in 1449 the town rebelled against Francesco Sforza, proclaiming itself a free commune and withstanding a roughly twenty-day siege by Sforza's troops.
