Magherno

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,690 · Postal code: 27010

The name of Magherno appears in the twelfth century as Maderno, and comes from maternus: the property inherited from the mother. The village's two most curious streets, on the other hand, have explanations that the source openly gives as legend: via Borgo Oleario would be tied to the oil that passing armies used up — to eat, to pour boiling from the top of the walls, to rub on weapons and on the body against the cold — and via Spadari to the landsknechts, expert swordsmen, who took part in the siege of Pavia of 1524 and 1525.

Of the village's two churches, half of each is left. Of the old parish church of San Zenone there remain the bell tower — which contains a brick dated 1414, probably the year it was built — and the apse, which today serves as a side chapel of the church rebuilt in 1841, turned round with its façade to the north, that is towards the village. Of the oratory of San Rocco, pulled down in 1960 amid no little controversy because it was unstable, here too the bell tower and the apse are left, and the apse still holds the statue of the patron saint.
