Copiano

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,794 · Postal code: 27010

Copiano lies in the eastern Pavese, in the plain on the left of the Olona, and was the seat of an ancient pieve of the diocese of Pavia: under the name of Cupianum it is recorded as early as the twelfth century, within that Campagna Sottana which was the lower part of the county. Then the village changed masters the way one changes a contract: a Beccaria lordship in the fourteenth century, enfeoffed to the Salerno of Pavia in 1622, passed to the Omodei in 1647 and to the Modignani of Lodi in 1717. No battles, only investitures.

The two dates that tell the story of modern Copiano stand exactly a century apart. Between 1884 and 1934 the village had a stop on the Pavia-Sant'Angelo Lodigiano tramway, the thread that held the plain's villages together before the buses. And the coat of arms, with its banner parted white and green, arrived only on 23 January 1984, when that tram had been closed for half a century.
