Feast of Saint Martin
📅 Every year, on 11 November
On 11 November Torre d'Arese celebrates its patron Saint Martin, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
Torre d'Arese has 977 inhabitants in the eastern Pavese, on the right bank of the southern Lambro, on the border with the Lodi area. A tower on this spot is named as early as 812; the rest of the name arrived much later, from the owners. In the fifteenth century the place was called «Tower of the heirs of Giovanni Arese»: it had been a fief of the Beccaria of Pavia and had passed to the Arese, an old Milanese family, counts of nearby Castel Lambro.
In 1676 the male line of the Arese died out and the tower passed to the Visconti Borromeo Arese, then by inheritance to the Litta Borromeo Arese: the surname, however, had by then stuck to the village and has never left it. The church of San Martino was built in the seventeenth century but consecrated only on 26 June 1887, more than two centuries later. The comune was later suppressed and joined to Magherno, and regained its autonomy in 1947.
