Menconico

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 378 · Postal code: 27050

It is said Menconìco, with the stress on the i: the village's own account insists on the point. The name may come from mons conicus, the round low hills typical of the Oltrepò, and the arms draw them with flocks upon them. The place belonged to the Malaspina from 1164, and the first division among the branches of the family, in 1221, was signed here, in the marquises' house.

This is the country of the Quattro Province, where the music is made with the Apennine piffero, the accordion, and once the müsa, the bagpipe of these mountains: it is the piffero that leads the dances. On the road to the Brallo stands the monument to three partisans killed in the battle of the Aronchio: Carlo Benedini, Felice Casotti and Giovanni Ferrari.
