Bobbio

Province: Piacenza · Region: Emilia-Romagna · Population: 3,711 · Postal code: 29022

Bobbio grew around an abbey, and the abbey was founded by an Irishman: Saint Columbanus, in 614. The monastery became one of the most important centres of learning in medieval Italy, with a famous library and lands scattered across the whole north. On 14 February 1014 the village was given the title of city, a diocese, an episcopal county and its walls.

Over the Trebbia stands the Ponte Gobbo, also called the devil's bridge: eleven arches, all different from one another. Bobbio changed administrative masters more than once: it was a province under the department of Genoa, then it belonged to the province of Pavia until 1923, and only since then has it been part of Piacenza. Hemingway called this valley the most beautiful in the world.
