Romagnese

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 744 · Postal code: 27050

Few villages have changed country and region so often. United with the Bobbio country to the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1743 by the Treaty of Worms, then annexed to Napoleonic France, in 1848 it passed from Liguria to Piedmont, and in 1859 it entered the province of Pavia and so Lombardy. In 1923, when the circondario of Bobbio was broken up, it found itself instead in the province of Piacenza and in Emilia.

The inhabitants would not have it. The protests culminated in what is called the march on Bobbio and in referendums, held on the twenty-seventh of February 1925, which were won by those asking to go back to Pavia; in 1926 Romagnese, Ruino and Zavattarello were annexed to the province of Pavia and to Lombardy. A short walk from the village the boundary stone still stands that marked the border between the Kingdom of Sardinia and the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza. The church, however, did not follow: the parishes of Romagnese still depend on the vicariate of Bobbio, in the diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio.
