Montescano

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 383 · Postal code: 27040

The comune is called Montescano, but its seat is Pozzolo, down in the valley: Montescano is the old centre, up on the hill. In 1164 the name appears in the imperial diploma that put most of the Oltrepò under Pavia, so it already counted for something. Afterwards it leaves few traces, but it never stops being a comune: except from 1929 to 1948, when it was joined to Castana.

The symbol of the village is a fountain. It is called Missaga, like the oligomineral spring it takes its water from, it is of the eighteenth century, and it has well-made lion heads set against the taps. The village is known too for an important centre of care and rehabilitation, and for the house of culture named after Antonio Pedrazzini.
