Pietra de' Giorgi

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 915 · Postal code: 27040

Pietra de' Giorgi has 915 inhabitants on a hill of the Oltrepò looking down on the plain. The name is a chain of owners: the Pietra, the stone, has been there from the start — it appears in 1164, in the diploma with which Frederick Barbarossa put half the Oltrepò under Pavia — then came the Sannazzaro, Guelphs, who in 1277 withstood a siege by the Ghibellines here; in 1405 the fief passed to the Beccaria and the village was called Preda Beccaria; and when at the beginning of the seventeenth century that line too died out, it was bought by the Giorgi di Vistarino, who left it the name it carries today.

Inside the fief of Pietra there was also another comune, Predalino: a castle in the northern part of today's village, whose territory was not one continuous piece but a set of lands scattered like leopard spots inside Pietra's own. It was suppressed in the eighteenth century. In 1818 came instead Pecorara, which had already swallowed the tiny comune of Montevico, and which had nothing to do with Pietra: it had always been a fief of Broni.
