Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Redavalle, a municipality of 1,056 inhabitants in the province of Pavia, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
Redavalle is the third in a line. First there was a Roman centre that the old itineraries call Cameliomagus or Comillomagus, garbled forms of a probable Camillomagus: exactly where it stood is not certain, because the distances given would suit Broni better, but Roman finds here are numerous. Then came San Martino in Strada, which with the name of its own parish church wiped out the ancient name of the place, and passed under Pavia in 1164. Redavalle is what was left afterwards.
In 1175 the troops of Piacenza and Cremona, at war with Pavia which stood with Frederick Barbarossa, burned the castle of San Martino: it stood on the hill facing the present church, at a spot still called Castellaro today, and the village never recovered. People moved a little further west, to a place already called Ridavalle in 1250, which ended up absorbing them all; around 1560 the parish church too was abandoned and the archpriest went to live beside the oratory of San Rocco, which has been called Santi Rocco e Martino ever since. The built-up area had grown so tight against the boundary that some of the houses stood in the municipality of Santa Giuletta: the anomaly was settled only in 1866, by ceding a piece of that territory to Redavalle.
