Saint Bernard, patron of San Martino in Strada

San Martino in Strada celebrates Saint Bernard on the third Sunday of September.
This village owes everything to the road, including its ruin. Born along the Roman road that ran from Laus Pompeia, today's Lodi Vecchio, to Cremona, it took its name from Saint Martin of Tours, whose cult came to Italy with the Franks, and from the road itself. But standing on an important route means having everyone who travels it pass over you: San Martino with its stronghold was taken, sacked and dismantled several times, and the most famous sack is that of 1270 at the hands of Napo della Torre, at war with the Visconti. Of the former splendour there remain today only the church and the Barattiera farmstead.
Three thousand six hundred and twenty-four inhabitants in the province of Lodi. On the twenty-fifth of June 1526 the papal troops allied with the Venetians against Spain, commanded by the duke of Urbino, camped here: the commanders held their council in this village before moving on Milan. Before the thirteenth century there was a great castle belonging to the bishops of Lodi, destroyed around 1400; in 1159 Frederick Barbarossa had granted the village to the monastery of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro. The present parish church is of 1576, the bell tower a century later.
