The pieve of San Zaccaria, at Giarone, is named in a bull of Innocent III of 1198, and parishes of two valleys still depended on it in the nineteenth century. Then it was abandoned: deconsecrated, it became a farm building, and so it stayed until between 1964 and 1998 it was restored.
The municipality is called Rocca Susella but the town hall is at Susella, which until 1905 was not even its own: it belonged to Montesegale, and only then passed here. In the Middle Ages the Rocca was a fief of the bishops of Tortona and was also a curia, that is, minor justice was administered here; in 1753 the sub-fief went to one Gerolamo Gambarana.
