The Po decided everything here: once it ran further south and left room for Sparvara, which was as important a place as Gambarana. The two families that held them were branches of the same counts palatine of Lomello, and the diploma by which in 1164 Frederick Barbarossa subjected the Lomellina to Pavia names them both.
Then the river ate Sparvara: of the village nothing was left but scattered farmsteads, and its counts moved to Cambiò, today a hamlet of Gambarana. The Sparvara died out in 1769; the Gambarana are still there. In the middle of the village stands a brick strong-house, square and without a courtyard, with traces of its battlements: it is the best-preserved building in the place, and it is a private home.
