Santa Cristina e Bissone

Province: Pavia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,028 · Postal code: 27010

The village grew up around an abbey, and the abbey had been founded by a king: Liutprand, king of the Lombards, in the first half of the eighth century, under the title of Sant'Anastasio; the name of saint Christina came a century later. For four hundred years the monastery received donations from kings and emperors, pope Urban II placed it under the archbishop of Milan, and in 1267 it gave hospitality to Conradin of Swabia, who the following year would be beheaded in Naples. In 1513 the Benedictines gave way to the Vallombrosans; in 1654 the monastery was suppressed.

Bissone, on the other hand, was a village of its own, a fief of the Della Pietra, who were forced to sell it to Regina della Scala, the wife of Bernabò Visconti: from her it passed for good to the Visconti, and the serpent has stayed in the second half of the coat of arms. The two comuni were joined in 1841, and the double name dates from 1863.
