Albosaggia

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,146 · Postal code: 23010

Nobody knows what Albosaggia means, and the hypotheses do not even resemble one another. Some read it as "holy mountain", some as "holy gift", bringing in an Etruscan noun carved on votive offerings, some as "holy light". Others start instead from the old dialect, in which the village was val-busàʃa, and trace the name to a pre-Latin base meaning a hollow. Others derive it from the Roman gens Albutia, like Albusciago and Albuzzano. And someone, looking at the woods that cover the slope, proposes the late Latin albosarius, that is woodcutter: from the holy mountain to the lumberjack, for one and the same village.

Albosaggia lies on the Orobic side of the middle Valtellina, directly facing Sondrio, and climbs from broadleaf woods to conifers above one thousand two hundred metres, where there are chamois, roe deer, red deer and ibex. The history of the village is entwined with that of the Paribelli, nobles of the Holy Roman Empire from 1581: among them Cesare, who in 1799 joined the provisional government of the Neapolitan Republic. On the Torchione torrent a hydroelectric plant has been working since 1922. Three thousand one hundred and forty-six inhabitants.
