Mantello

Province: Sondrio · Region: Lombardy · Population: 732 · Postal code: 23016

Mantello is a very small comune, a little under four square kilometres on the valley floor of the western Valtellina, and part of its territory belongs to the Costiera dei Cech. Its parish church keeps the memory of a place that no longer exists: the present building is of the sixteenth century, later restored and enlarged, but it was already the very ancient monastic pieve of the borgo of Olonio, and then of the monastery of San Colombano, which is attested at Mantello as early as 1217.

In 1422 it became the parish of Saints Gregory and Columbanus. The people, however, called it something else: already in 1589 it is commonly named after Saint Mark, and that dedication became the main one only in 1899 — three centuries for use to become title. In the hamlets of the comune there are two more churches: Santi Rocco e Sebastiano at Soriate and the oratory of the Madonna delle Grazie at Pusterla. The coat of arms and the banner were granted in 1997.
