Near the bridge of the Passo, until the Middle Ages, stood Olonio: a settlement on the via Regina that was also the seat of a pieve. In 1432 the waters of the Adda swept it away and the village was abandoned for good; the title of the pieve passed to Sorico. In 1520 another flood shifted the very course of the river, which until then had curved around the spur of Monastero and flowed out into the lake of Mezzola. Then, in 1900, Luigi Guanella drained the marshy ground at the mouth of the Valchiavenna and founded a new village there: he called it Nuova Olonio. The name drowned four and a half centuries earlier had come back, at another point of the plain.

Three thousand five hundred and fifty-one inhabitants in the province of Sondrio, the first municipality of the Valtellina and the Valchiavenna for anyone arriving from Como. In the old core there remain houses with wooden balconies and bread ovens. In the woods, isolated, lie the ruins of the church of San Giuliano, at the top of a sheer drop that overlooked the point where the Adda was crossed by boat: from up there both valleys are in sight.
