Albizzate

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,292 · Postal code: 21041

The name of Albizzate in all likelihood comes from an Arvidius, or from an Arvetius, with the suffix -ate added; some also link it to the Albizzi family and their castle, but that explanation rests on less. On the map of the Duchy of Milan kept in the Vatican the village appears as Albigi. The most notable thing it has is the Visconti oratory, where fourteenth-century frescoes of the Giottesque school are preserved, with the stories of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Louis of Toulouse.

The town hall is housed inside a villa, the Cà Taverna, which bears the name of the family that owned it for some two centuries: it grew out of the gradual joining of separate buildings, which in the end came to enclose a quadrangular courtyard, and from that courtyard a double baroque staircase rises to the floor above. In the fields around, wine is being made again: since 2005, with the recognition of the Ronchi Varesini, Albizzate has once more been growing Nebbiolo, Merlot, Erbaluce and Chardonnay.
