The name of Cavaria comes from a Benedictine convent, La Calvaria: over time it lost its initial L, while the article stayed attached to it in the local speech, La Cavària. Of Premezzo less is known. The village is said to be of Roman origin, but the dedication of its parish church to Saint Antoninus, who was a soldier, suggests that the place of worship goes back to the Lombards.
The recent history of the comune is a tangle of unions and separations. In 1870 Premezzo was joined to Orago con Cavaria; in 1892 Orago went off on its own and left Cavaria behind, which thus found itself paired with Premezzo, and until 1924 the comune went on being called simply Cavaria. The parish church of Cavaria was begun in 1813 beside the old church, later pulled down, and its vaults are frescoed with scrolls and coils of passion flower, painted in grey on a blue ground. In the cemetery, in the family tomb, rest the ashes of the singer Mia Martini.
