Bodio Lomnago

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,119 · Postal code: 21020

In 1863, on the lake of Varese in front of Bodio, three pile-dwelling stations were found: on 28 April the one at Bodio Centrale, also called «of the Coins» because 128 Roman coins came to light there, and on the first of December those of Desor and Keller. The finds — pottery, flint scrapers, arrowheads, bronze pins and dagger blades — tell of a village lived in from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. In 2011 the site of Bodio Centrale entered the UNESCO World Heritage list along with the other prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps.

The name of the comune, on the other hand, tells a more recent story. Bodio and Lomnago are two separate villages, one near the lake and one on the hill towards monte Rogorella; in 1928 Bodio was suppressed and absorbed by Lomnago. Eighteen years later, though, it was Lomnago that asked to change its name: since 1946 the comune has been called Bodio Lomnago, and the swallowed village is written first.
