Feast of Saint Charles Borromeo
📅 Every year, on 4 November
On 4 November Cazzago Brabbia celebrates its patron Saint Charles Borromeo; the town borders the Palude Brabbia nature reserve and preserves the Ponti pile-dwelling site.
Until 1863 the village was simply Cazzago; the Brabbia was added from the fief and pieve of Brebbia, to which it belonged. On the map of the Duchy of Milan in the Gallery of Maps of the Vatican Palaces, drawn in 1581, the village is already there, written Cāzoaga. Beside the houses lies the Brabbia marsh, a little under five hundred hectares between Lake Varese and Lake Comabbio: one of the best preserved lowland peat bogs in Italy, an alternation of dense reed beds and small sheets of open water that they call chiari here, and it is entrusted to the LIPU.
On the shore, instead, there are the ghiacciaie, the ice houses, built towards the end of the eighteenth century: sunken stores in which the winter's ice was kept for the summer. In the same period the village began to grow quickly: from a little over two hundred inhabitants at the beginning of the nineteenth century to more than six hundred by the middle of it. Of the rest there remain the church of San Carlo, of the seventeenth century, with paintings of the seventeenth and the nineteenth, and the two memorials to the fallen, one of 1918 and one of 1946.
