Brezzo di Bedero

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,185 · Postal code: 21010

The collegiate church of San Vittore il Moro, which here they simply call la Canonica, is recorded from 1100 and is Romanesque. Inside it an Ambrosian antiphonary was kept, one of those great books from which the choir sang: the winter part is no longer here, it is in the British Library in London.

From 1277 the village was the seat of a branch of the Sessa family, who in those same years were entering the patriciate of Milan. Much later, in 1928, Brezzo di Bedero stopped existing as a municipality for a good while: it was annexed to Luino, and its autonomy came back only after the war. Earlier still, under Napoleon, it had taken in neighbouring Muceno, which nearly doubled its population.
