Here the water of one lake ends up inside another. The Tresa, which is the outflow of Lake Lugano, reaches Lake Maggiore just north of the village of Germignaga, and shortly before its mouth it takes in the Margorabbia from the left. To these two is added the San Giovanni stream, which crosses the middle of the village and which in dialect they call La Fiume, in the feminine: it is the smallest of the three and the only one with a name of its own. Living between three watercourses and a lake shore has its price: in November 2014 the flooding of the Margorabbia forced the precautionary evacuation of many residents.

Three thousand seven hundred and twenty-four inhabitants in the province of Varese, just south of Luino, at the mouth of the Valtravaglia. The name is very old and has been through a long line of variants — Germaniaca in 807, then Cermignato, Zermaniaga, Germegnana, Lermignaca — before settling down. Local scholarship tried to derive it from the Germans or from Germanicus Julius Caesar, adopted son of Tiberius; toponymic studies trace it more modestly to the Latin name Germanius, and to an estate that belonged to him.
