Brissago-Valtravaglia

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,250 · Postal code: 21030

On 7 October 1944 the Republican National Guard surrounded a farmhouse at Gera, where the partisans of the Lazzarini formation were hiding: twenty-two were taken, four women and eighteen men. Twelve were shot at once, four on the spot, five in the centre of Brissago and three in Varese. It is the thing about this village that is remembered first.

The rest is a story of borders that shift. In 1927 Brissago, Roggiano and Mesenzana themselves asked to merge, for economic reasons, and Brissago Valtravaglia was born; in 1953 Mesenzana became a municipality of its own again. In the church of San Giorgio there is a Crucifixion frescoed in 1522 by Guglielmo Jotti.
