Buguggiate

Province: Varese · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,115 · Postal code: 21020

In little more than a century Buguggiate was annexed to three different municipalities. In 1809 it ended up inside Gazzada, in 1812 inside Bizzozero — two different villages within three years — and then, having regained its autonomy under the Austrians, in 1927 it was merged with Azzate. It got its municipality back only afterwards, and in 1961 it counted little more than a thousand inhabitants. Today they are three thousand one hundred and fifteen: the growth is all of recent decades, in a belt of villages a few kilometres from Varese.

Before that round of annexations the village had a single master: it was part of the fief of the Bossi together with neighbouring Brunello, and from that family the Valbossa takes its name, the valley it stands in. There remain the patronal church of San Vittore martire and two oratories, that of Santa Caterina and that of San Giovanni Battista. The municipality borders Varese, Azzate, Brunello and Gazzada Schianno, in the province of Varese.
