Feast of the Holy Cross (Gazzada)
📅 Every year, on 14 September
On 14 September the hamlet of Gazzada celebrates the Holy Cross, its patron; Schianno, the other part of the municipality, instead has Saint George, on 23 April.
The coat of arms of Gazzada Schianno was in use for more than a century without anyone ever having approved it. It was drawn by the architect Fausto Bagatti Valsecchi and presented in 1913, at the opening of the building that housed the school and town hall of what was then the comune of Gazzada; the decree that officially recognises it, on the other hand, is dated 2014. On that occasion its shape was changed too, from a baroque-framed ancile to a Samnite shield.
Villa Cagnola looks out over Lake Varese from a panoramic terrace, and it is notable enough that Bernardo Bellotto painted its western side: that picture is now in the Brera Gallery. In 1946 Guido Cagnola gave the villa to the Holy See, which has placed an institute of religious studies there; inside, the family collection is still kept, with paintings from the thirteenth to the nineteenth century, tapestries, majolica and oriental ceramics. The two villages that make up the comune were joined in 1927.
